It’s a depressing night in Seattle, Washington for Angelica and Breen Mason. The rain doesn’t make things better. The power has gone out a couple of times, and the streets have been quiet. All you hear is rain hitting the top of the house. Angelica and Breen get into a heated argument, right before he leaves his wife and daughter. Breen is going off to war to fight for his country. Angelica, is not too happy about his decision.
“So that’s it huh? You’re just going to leave me and Summer here by ourselves!? With no protector? You don’t even know how long you’re going to be gone for, there is no man of the house anymore.”
“Angelica, baby everything is going to be okay. I will be back before you know it.”
“No! Don’t tell me ‘everything is going to be okay’ because it’s not!” says Angelica as she mocks her husband in an aggravated tone.
“I have to go Angelica, it’s my duty. I don’t want to leave on bad terms, so come here and give me a big hug and kiss baby.”
Angelica slowly walks towards her husband with her head down. She looks up at him, teary-eyed.
“I just don’t want you to leave us, we need you Breen.”
“I know, it’s okay. Everything is going to be fine while I’m gone. It’s okay Angelica.”
Angelica squeezes her husband tight and buries her face into his green shirt.
Their 7-year-old daughter, Summer, hears yelling from across the hall and walks in to see her parents hugging.
“Mommy, daddy, what’s going on?”
“Nothing baby, go back to your room and play with Moreece” says Angelica wiping tears from her face.
“No baby, it’s okay. Come here and give daddy a big ole hug” says Breen.
Summer runs and wraps her arms around his waist.
“I love you baby.”
“I love you too daddy!”
***
The next morning, Breen wakes up at 8:00 am to head out, not knowing when he’ll see his family again. He walks in Summer’s room and kisses her on the forehead. He says to Summer’s stuffed animal, Moreece,
“You take care of her Moreece.”
He hugs and kisses his wife goodbye. Tears begin to fall from her eyes as she gives her husband one last hug.
Angelica goes in the house and starts making breakfast for Summer. Pancakes, eggs, bacon, and toast give the house a distinct smell. Summer wakes up to the delicious smell of breakfast food.
“You smell that Moreece! Mommy’s cooking breakfast!”
Summer rushes down the stairs to see only her mom in the kitchen.
“Where’s daddy?”
“Oh, he had to go away for a while sweetie, he’ll be back before you know it though”, says Angelica trying to hold back tears.
“What do you mean mommy? Where did he go? When will he be back?”
“I’m not sure baby. But he had to go somewhere for work. He will come back to us soon.”
“When is soon mommy? I didn’t get to say goodbye!”
Tears begin to fall down Summer’s cheeks.
“I want to see daddy!”
She bursts into tears and her mom runs over to comfort her. Angelica hugs Summer tightly with tears falling from both of their eyes.
“Daddy is going to be with us again, we just have to be patient baby. Come on, let’s eat these delicious pancakes!”, says Angelica wiping tears from both hers and Summer’s eyes trying to brighten the mood.
Month 1
Month 1 has been pretty hard for Summer, but even worse for Angelica. Angelica has started to miss Breen a lot and directs her anger towards Summer. Instead of spending time with her, Angelica spends time by herself sulking over her husband being gone. Summer constantly runs upstairs to cry and seek comfort from Moreece, but it isn’t enough.
Month 3
Summer is in the kitchen and has just finished eating her chicken nuggets and fries. She reaches for the brand-new mug her mom just got for Christmas, and Angelica can hear the glass shatter from the garage. She runs in quickly.
“Summer! What did you do!?”
“I….I was just trying to see your new mug, it looked so nice mommy. I’m..I’m sorry” Summer says stammering.
“Go to your room!”
“But, but I didn’t mean to mommy.”
“Right now, Summer!”
Summer runs upstairs and slams her door. She gets on her bed and squeezes Moreece. With tears running down her cheeks, she calmly talks to him.
“Moreece, why does mommy always yell at me and send me to my room. I didn’t mean to break her new mug, it was on accident. I wish daddy would come back. I still don’t know why he left. Mom won’t tell me, she doesn’t tell me anything. Why is she always so mad at me and I didn’t even do anything.”
It’s obvious that Angelica’s been struggling. One morning, Summer went into her room to tell her she was ready for school, but Angelica was still laying in the bed, sleep. Summer had to wake her up in a hurry so she wouldn’t be late. The same thing happened again yesterday.
“She makes me ride the bus now too with those mean kids. I don’t want to ride the bus Moreece. I like when mommy takes me to school. Hey, do you hear her making so much noise at night? I’m starting to think she leaves us here by ourselves, because I hear her car. She’s always waking me up with all the noise. Does it wake you up too Moreece?”
Moreece sits still as Summer continues to talk to him.
“Am I talking too much Moreece? I hope not, sometimes I really wish you could talk back to me. I feel so lonely, especially with daddy gone.”
Summer is silent and stares at Moreece for a while, until she starts crying. She hugs Moreece as tight as she can, wiping her tears with the teddy bear’s paws.
“I just want my daddy to come back Moreece. Can you please please pleaseee make him come back! Please, for me?”
Summer lays down and gets under the covers to go to sleep. She squeezes Moreece, and stares at the ceiling. She thinks about her dad and slowly falls asleep. She has a nightmare of her dad in a green, camouflage uniform. He has on tan boots and a hat as he hides in the woods, kneeling behind some trees. Breen has a gun in his hand. He see’s people approaching and starts shooting at them. Summer wakes up screaming. She runs to her mom’s room.
“Mommy, mommy! Wake up! I had another nightmare about daddy. He was carrying a gun and shooting people. I’m scared mommy! Is he okay?”
“Yes, baby it’s okay, it’s just a dream. It’s not real. Come here, come sleep next to me. You’re safe with me.”
“Can I go get Moreece?”
“Yes of course baby.”
Summer runs to her room, picks up Moreece, and gets in bed next to her mom.
***
A few months go by, and everything is the same. Emotional pain and sadness fill the house. Angelica is always in a bad mood and Summer talks to Moreece throughout the day to keep her occupied.
Month 6
Summer is talking to Moreece about how much she misses her dad. Her mom walks in and hears Summer talking.
“Hey baby, who you talking to?”
“Moreece. I’m talking to him about daddy, I miss him so much. When is he coming back mommy?”
“I don’t know baby, but hey want to order pizza tonight and watch a movie?”, she says trying to brighten the mood.
“No, I think I’m okay. I want to see daddy. I don’t want to do anything right now.”
“Ok what if I told you we were watching your favorite movie, ‘Moana’ and you get to have extra pepperoni on your pizza this time.”
Summer begins to smile.
“Yeahhh how does that sound?” says Angelica excitedly.
Summer smiles harder and looks up at her mother.
“Ok, I’d like that”, she says playing with Moreece.
An hour goes by and the doorbell rings. Summer races downstairs, expecting her hot and cheesy pepperoni pizza. Angelica opens the door, and a strange man walks in.
“Mommy, who’s that? He doesn’t have any pizza.”
“Oh, sweetie this is my good friend Marcus from college.”
Marcus is an old friend Angelica met at USC. They used to be a thing back then. They went their separate ways after Angelica transferred to the University of Washington. The long distance didn’t work out for them. Angelica then met her husband, Breen, at Washington. Marcus is currently a police officer for the Los Mines Police Force.
Marcus walks up to Summer.
“Hey you! You’re Summer right? I’ve heard so much about you, your mom always talks about you. You’re beautiful, it’s so nice to finally meet you.”
Marcus turns around and smiles at Angelica. She replies with a wink.
Summer is silent, not knowing what to say to this strange man.
Her mom says, “Summer, what do you say? Remember our manners.”
“Nice to meet you too”, says Summer.
***
Moments later, the doorbell rings again.
“Oh! Summer, that must be the pizza!” yells Angelica.
Angelica pays the delivery guy.
“Summer you ready to eat? Come on in the kitchen and eat baby!”
Summer is extremely quiet. She doesn’t move or talk. She stares at the ground until her mother notices something is up.
Angelica puts the pizza down on the kitchen table and walks over to Summer in the living room.
“Can you give us a minute?”, Angelica asks Marcus.
“Yeah sure”, says Marcus as he walks into the kitchen.
“Summer baby what’s the matter? You ok? Don’t you want to eat your pizza?”
“Why is he here? I thought we were going to watch Moana and eat pizza, just the two of us. You never said anything about anyone else” says Summer.
“We are baby, I just thought it would be okay if we added one more person to our movie night. Is that okay?”
“No, I’m not hungry anymore. I’m going upstairs to talk to Moreece” replies Summer.
“Summer come on, baby.”
Summer stomps upstairs and slams her door. Marcus goes over to Angelica.
“Are you going to go talk to her?”, he asks.
“She misses her daddy too much, she’s not coming back down to spend time with us but I’ll bring her up some pizza. Then we’ll have some time to ourselves. Maybe we can bring back some old memories from USC” Angelica says as she kisses Marcus on the lips.
“How is this going to work once Breen comes back? How are you going to keep this from him?”, asks Marcus.
“I’m going to make sure he doesn’t find out. He decided to leave and I’m not going to keep waiting on him. You’re so much better anyway” Angelica says as she leans in to kiss Marcus again.
“He better not find out, we really had a good thing going in college, I want to get back to that. Don’t you?” replies Marcus.
“Of course I do! But we have to be careful. My husband can show up any day, I don’t know when he will be back.”
“You mean your soon to be ex-husband” says Marcus smirking.
Angelica giggles nervously as she doesn’t know how she’s going to keep this from her husband once he gets back.
“I’m marrying you Angelica, I don’t care what Breen has to say”, says Marcus.
“I have to go check on Summer” says Angelica trying to change the subject.
“Ok, I’ll be waiting for you when you get back” replies Marcus.
Month 7
Summer gets off the school bus and walks in the house to see two plates and two cups on the kitchen table. Summer gasps and thinks to herself, “my daddy is back. He’s here! Yay finally!”
She runs to the deck thrilled to see her dad. She opens the door, only to be disappointed. It’s Marcus and her mom.
“Hey Summer, how was school?”, asks Marcus.
“Good”, says Summer as she walks away. She goes upstairs to talk to Moreece.
“Moreece, mommy seems happy now. But, it’s with this new guy named Marcus. I want daddy to be here, not Marcus. Why is he always over here Moreece? I don’t think daddy is going to like him because I don’t like him. Do you like him? If I don’t like him, you shouldn’t like him either. Mommy never wants to spend time with me. Before Marcus, she was always sad and mean to me. Now she’s happy but I don’t want to keep seeing Marcus. I just want her and daddy to be here with me.”
Month 8
Breen finally gets back from the military after being in Afghanistan for 8 months. He walks in the door with his uniform on and yells,
“Honey, Summer, guess who’s back!”
Summer and Angelica rush downstairs to give Breen the biggest hug ever.
“I missed you so much, don’t you ever leave me again” says Angelica.
“Ever!”, Angelica says as she kisses him on the cheek.
“Daddy where were you all this time! I didn’t think you would ever come back. Why didn’t you tell me you were leaving!”, exclaims Summer.
Breen picks up Summer and hugs her tightly.
“Daddy had to go help our country baby. I knew you would never get over me leaving, especially if you knew I was going to be gone for so long. Your mother and I thought it would be best to not tell you. But I’m back now, and I’ve been offered a new job.”
“What, Where!?”, asks Angelica in excitement. “I’m so excited for you, this is what I’ve been waiting for! Will you be home more now?”
“It’s a surprise, you’ll see. I’m just so happy to see my favorite girls! I missed y’all so much!” says Breen as he gives them another hug.
“Oh, Summer, I got you something.”
“I don’t want it, you just left me. Me and mommy were sad every day. You left without even saying goodbye!” Summer begins to cry.
“Ohhh baby baby I’m sorry, okay? Wipe them tears, turn that frown upside down. I’m here now and I’m never leaving you again. I promise. You’re going to love what I got you.”
Breen digs into his bag and pulls out a purple teddy bear.
“Here you go Summer, now Moreece will have someone to talk to. You like her?”
Summer’s entire mood changes. A huge smile grows on her with tears still rushing down her face.
“Thank you so much daddy, she’s adorable! I love her!”
“What are you going to name her sweetie?”, asks her mom.
“Hmm how abouttt, Patty. I’m going to call you Patty.”
Summer gives her dad a huge hug and rushes upstairs.
She turns around and yells, “thanks daddy!”
“That was nice of you Breen. Where’s my gift?” Angelica says smiling.
“Your gift is going to be the great news I tell you at dinner tonight honey. You’re going to be thrilled.”
Breen sighs, “phew, that was a long trip back home. I’m going to go shower.”
“Ok honey, I’ll head to the grocery store to get some food for dinner. See you soon!”
Angelica already has the ingredients she needs to make dinner, so she doesn’t go to the grocery store. Instead, she meets up with Marcus. She runs towards Marcus and jumps on him. Marcus puts her down and kisses her.
“So, what was so important that you couldn’t tell me over the phone?” asks Marcus
“Well, I have some bad news. Breen is back.”
“Dang it, so what are we going to do now? Just sneak around to see each other?” asks Marcus.
“I’ll figure it out, we just have to be cautious with the texting now.”
“Ok well get home so he isn’t suspicious, take this fruit so you don’t go home empty handed. Bye gorgeous, see you soon.”
Angelica begins to blush as she takes the fruit from Marcus and gives him a kiss. She drives back home and starts cooking dinner. After 45 minutes, she calls her family to the dinner table.
“Summer, Breen! Dinner’s ready, come eat!” yells Angelica.
The family of three start eating their pulled chicken sandwiches along with tater tots, fruit, and steamed green beans.
“So, guys, want to know what my next job is going to be?”
“Yes, what is it!?”, asks Angelica excitedly.
“Yeah, daddy where are you going to be working now, you won’t leave again will you?”, asks Summer while stuffing her face with tater tots.
“No, I won’t be leaving you again sweetie. The police force offered me a job as a detective!”
“Wow! Congrats! That’s awesome Breen, how did you get that offer?” asks Angelica.
“I told General Leeks that I didn’t want to be away from my family anymore and asked if he had any thoughts on what I could do instead of serving. He said he had connections with the police force and that he could get me a job there. I told him that it would be awesome if he could get me a job as a detective because I’m smart and have a passion for it. After that, he told me that it’s a done deal! Since I was one of the best soldiers and the smartest on my squad, they’re allowing me to be a detective for the Los Mines Police Force.”
Angelica spits her water out and looks at her husband in shock.
“The Los Mines Police Force! Wow! Well, that’s exciting news! I am so proud of you!”, says Angelica, her heart beating faster than ever.
“Good job daddy!” says Summer as she takes a bite out of her sandwich.
“So, did you meet any of the guys yet?”, asks Angelica.
“No, I report first thing in the morning to meet them. I’m excited!”
“Yeah, I’m excited for you! This is big!”, says Angelica, worried, but tries her best to hide it.
Angelica gets on her phone under the table to text Marcus, “Breen is working for the Los Mines Police Force with you starting tomorrow! Act normal!”
“Who you texting over there?”, asks Breen.
“Oh, I was just texting mom telling her I can’t believe you’re back!”, replies Angelica.
Summer yells, “finished mommy!! Thank you it was sooo good!”
“I’m glad you liked it baby. Help mommy clean off the table.”
***
The next morning, Breen drives over to the Los Mines Police Station to meet everyone.
“What’s up man, my names Breen. Nice to meet you, I look forward to working with you.”
“My names Marcus, nice to meet you man”, says Marcus as he shakes Breen’s hand with a firm grip.
“What’s your name son?”, asks Sheriff Dunken.
“Breen Mason, sir. Nice to meet you Sheriff.”
“Ahh so you’re the guy General Leeks was telling me all about. I heard some great things about you Breen. You’re going to be my best detective, I can already see it son. Therefore, I’m putting you with Officer Marcus. Anytime something comes up and you need to go to a crime scene, you go with Marcus, you hear me son?”, says Sheriff Dunken.
“Yessir, I hear you. Thank you for giving me this opportunity sir.”
“No problem. By the way, we run a tight ship around here so make sure you’re on time every day and take note of everything. You’re a detective now, that’s a big task. Anything can be a clue.”
“Yessir”, replies Breen.
Breen and Marcus grow very close going on many missions together. They get to know each other better and better every time they have a new task to complete. Breen tells Marcus about his wife, Angelica and his daughter, Summer.
“Sounds like a beautiful family, I would love to meet them some day.”
“Oh yeah I definitely have to invite you over some time” replies Breen.
2 Weeks Later
Breen walks past one of the rooms in the station and hears Marcus talking to some of the other officers. They are all laughing as Marcus tells a story.
“What did you just say?”, Breen interrupts the conversation.
“Oh, nothing man”, says Marcus swiftly.
“No seriously man what did you say?”, asks Breen.
“I was just telling the officers about me and my new girl, her name is Angela.”
“Oh, ok cool, when did you meet this Angela?” asks Breen.
“Ehhh, about 8 months ago”, replies Marcus.
Breen pauses for a second. Then he speaks again.
“Oh, ok nice man. I’ll see y’all later.”
As Breen walks away, he can’t help but to think how weird Marcus was acting when he questioned him in front of the other officers.
Breen thinks to himself:
“Maybe he was lying. Maybe he really didn’t want to tell me what they were talking about because I’m not as close with them yet and I’m still the new guy. Eh, maybe I’m going crazy and thinking too much about it.”
Breen brushes it off and thinks about how he can’t wait to get home to see his wife and daughter.
Breen gets home and walks upstairs. He hears Summer talking. Summer is talking to Patty and Moreece about how she hasn’t seen Marcus now that her dad is home. Once Breen walks in her room, she stops talking.
“Summer, who are you talking to?”
“I was just talking to Moreece and Patty. I talk to them a lot.”
“Oh, ok sweetie. I was just checking in on you. I was thinking about you at work today.”
“You were? I’m okay daddy, thank you.”
As he smiles at her and heads toward the door, she stops him.
“Wait daddy, do you know someone named Marcus?”
“Yes, I do sweetie, I work with a Marcus.”
“He was here when you were gone. He came over twice.”
Breen gives Summer a serious look.
“What did he look like?”, asks Breen.
Summer describes Marcus and as Summer gives the details, Breen realizes that it is the same Marcus from the police force.
“Thank you for letting me know baby. Do you know where your mother is?”
“Oh yeah, she said she was going to the store and that she would be right back.”
Breen thinks intensively.
“Ok honey, thank you.”
Breen goes into the master bedroom and begins looking through Angelica’s drawers. He talks to himself:
“Ok, diary no I’m not looking through that. All the books she’s read, ok. Hmm what’s this? Oh, an old camera ok, and underneath of this is a let’s see…an old watch. Let’s look in this last drawer.”
Breen opens the drawer.
“Wha…”
Breen furrows his eyebrows and picks up the photos.
“What are these pictures Angelica?”, he asks himself.
“Is that Marcus!? He really was over here when I was gone. Were they having an affair!?”
Breen looks at the ceiling as he feels a sharp pain in his heart. He sits down on the floor, back against the bed. He looks at the multiple pictures Angelica and Marcus have taken in the bed, his bed…in his house. Heartbroken, Breen closes his eyes. He gets a feeling that his heart is crumbling. He looks at the pictures again, hands shaking. As he stares at one, the one with Marcus laying on his pillow, a tear falls on the photo.
Breen wants to confront both Marcus and Angelica, but he wants to take the approach of pretending like he doesn’t know anything.
That night, when Angelica gets back from the “grocery store”, Breen tries his best to hold it together and pretend like everything is normal.
***
The next day at the station, Breen invites Marcus over for dinner.
“I want to thank you for helping me out these first couple of weeks. You really have been a great friend and mentor. So come over tonight to have dinner with the family, I’ll see you at 8.”
That night, the doorbell rings at 7:55 pm.
“Ahh look who’s early!”, says Breen in a joyful mood.
“Come on in, welcome. Let’s meet the family. Wifey, this is Marcus who I go on every mission with. He’s taught me everything I need to know about being a detective and police officer. Marcus, meet my wife, Angelica.”
Angelica and Marcus shake hands nervously as if they don’t already know one another.
Summer comes downstairs and sees Marcus. She rushes over to her dad and pulls him aside. She whispers, “daddy, what is Marcus doing here!?”
“Don’t worry Summer, I’ve got a plan. You gave me an idea after you told me about him last night.” Breen puts his pointer finger on his lips telling Summer to keep this a secret. She does the same back to him.
Everyone sits down at the dinner table, prepared to eat. While everyone passes around the spaghetti, broccoli, and garlic bread, Breen starts the conversation.
“So, I think you guys both have some explaining to do.”
Angelica and Marcus look at each other, puzzled.
“Wha..what do you mean baby?” asks Angelica stammering.
“Yeah, I don’t know what you’re talking about Breen” says Marcus.
“Ohh I think everyone here knows you made a big mistake.”
“Breen, what’s going on? What did Marcus do? Was it something he did back at the station honey?” asks Angelica.
“No, I have no idea what you’re talking about Breen, tell me what’s going on” says Marcus.
“Summer baby, do you mind taking your food and going upstairs to your room for ten minutes. Talk to Moreece and Patty and I’ll come get you in a second.”
“Ok daddy.” Summer walks upstairs with her food and closes her door.
Breen begins talking again.
“I’m sorry, now where were we? Oh yeah, y’all had an affair while I was gone for 8 months. That’s what’s going on. You made love to my wife in my bed, my room, my house. I thought you were a cool guy who was going to be a lifelong friend, but I was completely blindsided by you man.”
“Breen, what!? Are you serious man? I just met your wife for the first time just now. Until today, I had never seen her before man!” replies Marcus.
“Yeah, Breen this is my first time meeting your friend Marcus. I would never cheat on you, no matter how long you’re gone for.”
“Ok, then explain this.” Breen throws out all the pictures that were hidden in Angelica’s bottom drawer.
“It seems like he’s more your friend than mine” says Breen.
“You went through my stuff!? Breen! That’s private stuff in there!” yells Angelica.
“Y’all been hiding secrets this entire time!!” Breen yells furiously.
“I can’t believe y’all! Acting like y’all don’t know each other! You know what, Marcus, you can have her.”
Breen stands up.
“I ain’t going to be married to no slut. Go get her! And I knew you were acting funny when I saw you talking to the other officers yesterday. You gave me all the hints. Angela, met her 8 months ago, I should of known!”
Breen points at Angelica, “and you! Wow, my own wife betraying me. Ridiculous. I have no words to say to you.”
“You really thought Angela was a real person man?”, Marcus says laughing.
Breen grits his teeth and clenches his fist.
“What you just say?” says Breen.
Before Marcus can get it out again, Breen runs over and punches Marcus out of his chair. They wrestle onto the ground, exchanging punches. Angelica starts screaming and rushes over. She tries to pull her husband off Marcus, but Breen pushes her away. Breen continues to land punches, Marcus’ ribs and face getting most of the hits. Angelica is able to pull Breen off of Marcus this time. Marcus gets up, face full of blood.
“That’s all you got? I stole your wife, remember.”
Breen tries to attack Marcus again but Angelica holds him back with all her might.
“Get off me Angelica! I’m out! You can have this punk. And I’m taking Summer with me.”
“You have to understand that you went to the military and left us for months even though I told you I didn’t want you to go! You didn’t care about how I felt! Or Summer! I asked you not to go and you just left anyway” says Angelica.
“So that means you go out and cheat on me!? Where did this guy come from anyway!?” asks Breen.
“I went to college with her bro, she was with me first”, says Marcus smiling as you can see his bloody teeth.
“I wasn’t talking to you, ain’t no one talking to you bro!” yells Breen angrily.
“I’m out man, I’m going to get my daughter.”
Breen heads upstairs with blood still on his hands. He washes them in a hurry and walks into Summer’s room. He sees Summer crying, holding onto Moreece and Patty.
“I don’t want to be here anymore daddy, I’m scared.”
“Come on baby, we’re leaving.”
Breen throws a bunch of Summer’s clothes into a duffle bag and walks down the steps, holding the duffle bag in one hand and his daughter’s hand in the other.
“We’re out, and we ain’t ever coming back.”
“You can’t just take our daughter away from me!!”, says Angelica crying.
“Yes, I can, and I will. Watch me.”
Breen and Summer walk out the front door and get into Breen’s car. Angelica comes running out the door. She bangs on the car window, tears rushing from her eyes. You can hear her from outside the window, “don’t leave me! Please Breen! I’m sorry!!”
Breen doesn’t even look her way. He asks Summer, “you ready?”
Summer replies, “yes, I have you, Moreece, and Patty.”
“Perfect, that’s all we need in our lives baby” says Breen.
He drives off, not knowing where he and his daughter are going, but relieved that he is no longer with someone he doesn’t trust.
Breen looks at his daughter, “always remember baby, trust no one.”
