Uncle Donn’s Last Day

“So why did he do it dad?”, Lizzy asked. “Why did he kill your brother?”

“Well, it’s a long story; you ready for it?”

She said in disbelief “yes father.”

“Ok so your Uncle Donn was going to two parties in one night. He had told your Auntie Shelia that he was going to one party and then to a friends house after. So Aunt Shelia didn’t know anything about this second party, where it was, who was going, nothing. No one knew about it. I’m surprised he didn’t even tell me. You know my friend Jasen who I work with, he went to the second party as well and told me what he heard happened. The second party was in Mile Steeps, Oklahoma; a neighborhood you don’t want to be in. So he went to this second party and wanted to leave but the people wouldn’t let him…”

“Why wouldn’t they let him leave daddy?”, Lizzy asked.

“He was in a bad neighborhood hanging with the wrong group of people. Some guys at the party decided to call a couple of more people over to gang up on him. They thought he was leaving the party too early. They thought he was being disrespectful because he didn’t wanna stay anymore. They wanted to teach him a lesson since he wasn’t ‘Welcome in Mile Steeps’, that’s what they had told him. They were surrounding him and luckily your uncle saw a gun just laying on the countertop. He took it and ran. He ran so fast like it was gonna be the last seconds of his life. They tried to run after him but he was already almost out of sight. You know how fast your Uncle Donn was, he put that track speed to good use. So, they got in their 2020 Cadillac Escalades and pulled up on him. Next thing you know, all you hear through the city are gun shots………….. (Cornwallis holds back tears) they had shot him in the leg three times and once in the stomach. He tried to get back up but as soon as he tried, they starting beating on him. That was your Uncle Donn’s last day. I couldn’t believe it, it was all over the news.

I saw on the news that night, ‘and of course, another shooting down in Mile Steeps, Oklahoma. No surprise here folks, as another gang kills an innocent man, this time being Donn Jenkins. Please send his family your blessings.’

That was one of the saddest moments of my life. I cried for a week. I couldn’t sleep. It was terrible. I just can’t believe my brother is gone……………So to answer your question Lizzy, that’s why your Uncle Donn was killed.”

Lizzy’s father, Cornwallis, leaves the kitchen miserable after telling his daughter what happened to his brother, Donn. He walks up the stairs and goes into the master bedroom where his wife, Pilda, is sitting on the bed reading The Help.”

“Uncle Donn was such a good guy. He didn’t deserve to go. I miss my brother, Pilda. I can’t live like this. I can’t live my life knowing the people who murdered him are still out there. I think I’m going to go to Mile Steeps.”

“WHAT!? YOU MUST BE OUT OF YOUR MIND … Your brother just died there Cornwallis, what if they find out you are Donn’s brother and they kill you too. Then what? I know it hurts Cornwallis, but you can’t go there. One death is already bad enough, we cannot lose you too. Please…just think. You’re not thinking straight. Your emotions are very high right now. Get a good nights rest and you will feel better in the morning.”

“Ok you’re right. Goodnight Pilda”

The Next Morning – 6:45 am

Cornwallis gets up after struggling to sleep all night thinking about Donn. He gets in his car and starts driving, not having a destination in mind. He thinks about his life, how different it is going to be. He thinks about his brother and what those people did to him. All of a sudden, he turns his car around and heads toward……………………………..Mile Steeps.

He sees an old friend, Court Mints, come out on his porch and sit on the sofa. Cornwallis pulls up in his Ford Mustang GT and rolls down the window.

“Aye!!!”

“Yoooo wassgood”, replies Court.

“Whaddup Court, long time no see.”

“Yeah man how you been?”

“Not so good, I can’t stop thinking about my brother.”

“Oh yeah sorry about that man. I heard what happened.”

“You know who did it? I know you were probably at that party with em. Can you tell me who did it? I won’t snitch or nuthin, I just want my revenge.”

“Nah man I’m sorry, I was actually out of town that day. I saw it on the news in my hotel room.”

“Where were you?”

“I went to ummm, what’s the place called? Uhhh oh yeah it was Miami. I went for a little vacation. I needed a change of scenery.”

“Aight man well if you hear anything about what happened, let me know.”

“Will do bro, it was nice seeing you. Sorry it had to be under these circumstances.”

“All good bro, we’ll talk soon” replies Cornwallis as he zooms off.

Cornwallis speeds home, hoping his wife is still in the bed not noticing he has left. He pulls in the driveway at 10:00 am. He walks in the house to see Pilda drinking coffee at the kitchen table.

“I see you went for a drive” says Pilda. “Where were you? I was surprised to see you gone so early.”

“Yeah……I had to clear my head. I couldn’t sleep………………..”

“Where were you?”

………………..

“Cornwallis, I know you hear me. Where were you?”

It stays silent for about 10 seconds until Pilda goes off.

(Pilda slams her coffee on the table) “CORNWALLIS ANSWER ME RIGHT NOW! Where were you!? Please don’t tell me you went to Mile Steeps.”

Cornwallis looks away avoiding eye contact not saying a word.

(SIGHS) “WOW. REALLY! Right after I told you not to? Cornwallis, listen. I know you’re angry and upset. I can’t imagine how you feel right now. I understand why you want revenge but you are going to get yourself killed! I don’t want you going back there. Do you hear me?”

Cornwallis still looking away hasn’t moved an inch.

“CORNWALLIS LOOK AT ME! PICK YOUR HEAD UP!”

Cornwallis finally looks at Pilda, shaking his head. He says,

“Pilda, I’ve been thinking a lot lately and I can’t take this pain anymore. I need to figure out who did this to my brother. They need to pay for what they did.”

“And you think killing someone will stop the pain? Your brother will still be gone. Cornwallis, we talked about this. You are not getting vengeance. You killing someone won’t bring him back, it will only take you away from me and Lizzy. You will end up in prison or worse, dead. Let the police do their job, we will get justice for Donn.”

“THE POLICE AREN’T DOING ANYTHING! IT’S BEEN A WEEK PILDA! It’s time to take matters into my own hands. I’m done waiting.”

Pilda pauses. She takes a second to think about what she’s going to say next to her furious husband.

“No need to yell Cornwallis….Let me ask you a question. What exactly did you do when you went to Mile Steeps?”

“I talked to an old friend. Tried to get some information.”

“Who? What friend?”

“……..Court Mints”, replied Cornwallis.

“COURT MINTS?? The guy Donn went to college with?”

Court Mints had known Donn Jenkins from the University of Illinois. They were really good friends and Court had invited Donn to the second party. Donn didn’t tell his wife, Shelia, about the second party because Shelia thinks Court is a bad influence. She always got this weird vibe from him at Illinois.

“Yeah. I felt like he would be at the party but he said he was out of town.”

“And you really believe that? You know he was probably at that party and knows exactly who did it. Don’t fall for his lies. He’s always been a liar. Donn would even tell you that.”

“I dunno, I just need to figure out who would do something like that to my brother.”

Cornwallis leaves to go to work. He pulls up at his job, Ledo’s Pizza, and see’s his friend Jasen working.

“Wassup Jasen I thought I was gonna miss you, don’t you get off at 2:00?”, asks Cornwallis.

“Yeah I’m about to head out right now bro but it’s your first day back at work since the incident, I had to check up on you man. How you holding up?”

“I’m hanging in there but can I ask your opinion on something?”

“Yeah, sure go ahead.”

“I went to Mile Steeps early this morning and I…”

Before Cornwallis can get his statement out, Jasen interrupts him.

“YOU WHAT!? Why man? Why would you go to the place where Donn was killed?”

“I needed answers so I went to talk to Court Mints. He said he was out of town but I thought for sure he would be at that party and give me a clue of who killed Donn. He’s at every party down there.”

Jasen shakes his head in disappointment. He doesn’t know what to say. He stares nervously at the ground not saying a word.

“What’s up man why you got that look on your face, what’s going on?”, asks Cornwallis.

“You know how I was at the party right? Bro, I saw who did it……….I was trying to protect you. That’s why I didn’t tell you who it was when I told you the story the first time. I saw the whole thing happen. I knew you would go after them so I didn’t tell you who did it.”

“You’re lying. Look at me and tell me you’re lying Jasen. It’s no way you saw the whole thing happen. You didn’t see it.”

“I saw it Cornwallis, I’m sorry bro. It was nothing I could do. They had guns! I’m sorry man. I didn’t want to tell you, I knew it would hurt you even more. You have suffered enough.”

(Cornwallis raging with anger tries to stop the tears from rushing down his cheeks) “YOU SAW IT AND DIDN’T STOP THEM!? I KNEW YOU WERE AT THE PARTY BUT I THOUGHT YOU WERE INSIDE THE HOUSE WHEN IT HAPPENED! MY BROTHER COULD BE ALIVE RIGHT NOW JASEN! WHO DID IT!? HUH? WHO WAS IT? SINCE YOU DIDN’T STAND UP FOR MY BROTHER, I WILL! WHO WAS IT!?” **Cornwallis walks closer to Jasen and shoves him as he says** “YOU SHOULD HAVE PROTECTED HIM MAN!!! WHO WAS IT THAT KILLED MY BROTHER!?”

“I don’t think you want to know.”

Cornwallis furiously steps closer to Jasen and gets in his face.

“NAH TELL ME. YOU BETTER TELL ME RIGHT NOW OR I PROMISE U I WILL DROP YOU IN THIS LEDOS. I’M NOT PLAYING, TELL ME WHO DID IT! WE SUPPOSED TO BE COOL MAN! WHO WAS IT??”

“I’m sorry Cornwallis, it was……………………………………..(Jasen shakes his head in anguish) Court……Mints. He lied to you bro. Him and his boys took out your brother. He wasn’t out of town, he’s the one who threw that party.”

Cornwallis doesn’t say a word to Jasen and immediately turns around and darts to his car. He speeds off in his Ford Mustang GT.

Cornwallis pulls up to Court Mints’ house to see Court and his boys hanging out on the porch.

“Ahhhhh look who’s back! Twice in one day? To what do I owe the pleasure?” asks Court grinning as Cornwallis steps out the car.

“I KNOW IT WAS YOU! IT WAS YOU THIS WHOLE TIME AND YOU LIED STRAIGHT TO MY FACE!!! YOU’RE GONNA PAY FOR WHAT YOU DID TO MY BROTHER! COME ON, ME AND YOU, 1 ON 1. LET’S GO!”

“Woah woah woah, I told you I was in Miami man. I saw what happened to your brother on the news. Iont know what you talking about bro. I don’t want no trouble.”

“STOP LYING COURT AND OWN UP TO IT LIKE A MAN! I KNOW IT WAS YOU! IMMA KILL U MURDERER!”

Cornwallis starts walking towards them and Court’s crew steps up. Court waves them off and tells them to relax. He says…

“I got this punk by myself.”

Cornwallis runs toward Court and tackles him to the ground. They both start throwing punches, landing multiple hits to the face. They get back up and Cornwallis lands a haymaker. Court falls to the ground in pain.

“GET UP COURT!!! LETS GO! YOU’RE WEAK, GET UP AND FIGHT!”, Cornwallis yells angrily.

Court gets up and wrestles Cornwallis to the ground. He lands a couple of punches to Cornwallis’ face. Then, Court gets up and says,

“I’m tired of this” and shoots him in the leg three times. Court stands over top of Cornwallis wheezing and says,

“Hmm this looks familiar. Oh yeah, this is the same thing I did to your brother, except he was in a little bit more pain than you (Court snickers). Ahhh man I knew you would come for him but I thought you had a little bit more fight in ya……….you definitely fought more than Donn though……….And oh, you figured it out! Yeah it was me that killed him and you ain’t gon do nun about it. Guess what, y’all are just alike……ya’ll both gon die wit three bullets in ya leg and one in ya stomach. Aye, tell Donn I said what’s up when you see him.”

Court points the gun at Cornwallis’ stomach. Right when he is about to pull the trigger, he hears the sirens.

“Not as smart as you think you are huh?”, says Cornwallis grinning at Court.

“You snitch, you calling the police now? Dang man, this ain’t over Cornwallis.”

Court Mints and his crew run in the house and try to sneak out the back way. As they run out the back door, they realize it is too late as the police have already surrounded the house. Everyone gets taken down to the station, where they all answer a series of questions and are sent to prison for the murder of Donn Jenkins. Court however, will suffer more and have a harsher sentence for not only being involved in the murder of Donn Jenkins, but also the attempted murder and aggravated assault of Cornwallis Jenkins.
